Students Empowered!

“Yes!  We have Empower Hour at Superhero Headquarters!”  is what I envision students cheering as the clock ticks toward what used to be known as “computer lab” time.  This past Friday, Elmwood students screamed with joy as I announced the new name for this special room and special time focused solely on them.  This “lab” is slowly becoming a place where students believe they can do amazing things that have the potential to be shared with the world.  To understand that technology gives each student a voice is difficult to grasp, but as they continue to see it in action, their understanding of using the computer will hopefully be forever changed.

Starting with BrainPOP- an engaging, self paced, anytime blended tool, that engages students beyond belief!

Access to BrainPOP and BrainPOP Jr doesn’t mean the same as it used to.  This educational tool has become a platform for individualized learning!  Now with “My BrainPOP” teachers and students can build their own virtual classrooms together.  When this takes place the “video and quiz” reputation becomes one of learning, assessment, as well as communication. Both BrainPOP and BrainPOP Jr have numerous new activities, graphic organizers, and games that students can complete online and submit to their teachers.  Teachers can then provide feedback to students which creates important conversation.  These “assignments” become part of each student’s digital BrainPOP portfolio (their own “My BrainPOP”) and together form a class view for teachers unlike anything we’ve seen before.

When students are on the road to empowerment through technology, it’s important to keep our eye on the ball-Which tools are engaging?  (Who doesn’t love Tim, Moby, Annie, and Ben:) What are the most beneficial tools that can put students in charge of their learning? Which tools will allow for teachers to meet individual needs through a variety of assessment?  BrainPOP and BrainPOP Jr are great places to start and your students will feel like the superheroes they are!
