Pitching Promising Prototypes
Grade 5 students at Hopkins School have now experienced the engineering and design process from soup to nuts. Through the City X Project, students developed a 3D-printable solution to a predefined problem by empathizing, defining the problem, ideating solutions, prototyping, testing, and sharing. All students pitched their ideas to their classmates and created a marketing page in Google Sites. The project culminated last week with the top three engineers from each classroom squaring off in the final round of the design pitch-off. One student was chosen from each class to have their design printed on the ROBO 3D printer.
While the City X Project is over, the engineering quest continues. Students will spend the next few classes tinkering in the makerspace where they will be challenged to use a variety of tools and materials to create movable sculptures, videos, clothing, and musical instruments. Tinkering will spark creativity while familiarizing students with an array of design-related media. The mini-challenges will also prepare the young engineers for their next problem-based adventure. The technolibrary classroom will become a chamber of change as students select a social issue and set out to design a solution in the Hopkins Makerspace.
